Exhibition: Exit Biennial: The Reconstruction
began with an open call for proposals, bringing in more than 400
submissions. Artists
were asked to create an installation as a metaphor for Exit Art’s
renovation/reconstruction and its relationship to the new space
and neighborhood. The participating artists talked about their
concepts and installations on the night of the opening and worked
on realizing their projects until the closing. The entire process
of installation was open to the public and viewable on Exit Art’s
website.

Exhibition: L Factor was a multidisciplinary arts project that
investigated the fusion of Latino language and culture into the
mainstream “American” culture of the United States.
Exit Art’s aim was to expose how Latin influence has factored
in American culture and society by inviting artists to respond
to their experience of the Latin influence. The exhibition was
itself a method for removing this art from being framed by “border
issues” and placing the influence of Latin culture within
the paradigm of American culture-at-large, including food, music,
movies, television, and political issues. L Factor was about the
influence of Latin culture and the resulting hybridizations of
language, visual art, music, poetry, and politics.
The Americanization
of Latino culture and the Latinization of American culture are
at the heart of the hybridization of both Americas.
