Evenings at Exit Art

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11th, 8-10pm

Performances by Byron Westbrook , Koen Holtkamp and Scott Mou

The ubiquitous presence of audio amplification in Electric Lab references the drastic effect the advent of electricity had on the human relationship to sound and audiovisuals. Artists Byron Westbrook, Koen Holtkamp and Scott Mou combine new and old technologies to push the boundaries of solo musical performance. By filtering sound through electronic objects, each of these artists create hypnotic audiovisual performances that focus on the subtle, meditative qualities available to the medium of electronic sound.

Byron Westbrook's CORRIDORS distributes samples of raw instrumentals to multiple broadcast locations to create a pastiche of new sounds. Accompanied by projections of slow moving electric light filaments, the overall performance is far more architectural and experiential than it is traditionally musical.

Koen Holtkamp creates music using field recordings and acoustic instruments and objects. These sounds are played live through a series of both analog and digital electronics to create a gradual and melodic experience.

Scott Mou's QUEENS is an innovative take on the traditional voice/guitar performance. Nylon string guitar, voice and minidisc recordings are fed through a series of delays, creating an intimate and dark sound that references Arthur Russell & Simon Finn.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18th, 9-Midnight

A night of electricity-inspired music featuring the DJs Crunc Tesla, Prince Language and Brennan Green.

Three DJs (Brennan Green, Prince Language and Crunc Tesla) will each spin a curated set of records whose lyrics and/or sounds directly reference electricity.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25th, 8-10pm

Live performances by LoVid and Jamie Allen.

LoVid will perform inside of their Electric Lab installation at Exit Art. The performance, Lighter Than Air And Easier To Carry will include audience participation and interaction with the synthesizer.

"Electrocuting an Elephant" is a multimedia lecture and performance starring Nikola Tesla and Jamie Allen.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1st, 8-10pm

Performances by The Loud Objects and dance performance with Ben Margolis and Jenny Torino’s neuromuscular stimulators. Q & A and reception to follow.

In the tradition of the performance work pioneered by Stelarc, Torino:Margolis presents "Duet by Proxy," a dance piece utilizing neuromuscular stimulation to introduce multiplicity into a single body. The audience is given remote-controls that operate neuromuscular stimulators that are attached to a dancer. The audience controls some of the dancer's body, and the dancer responds with the limbs remaining under the dancer's control. Hence, the single body ends up performing a duet. Choreography by Kelly Bartnik.
