Exhibition: This historical show examined artists’ work, 1930-1982, from the United States, Europe, and Japan, who in the process of making their work came into conflict with the law, challenging issues of legality and censorship. The show included photo-documentation of the work with an artist statement and extensive written documentation of each incident, many of which continued as legal cases.

Publication: Critical text by curators Jeanette Ingberman and Papo Colo. Statements by each of the artists in the exhibition and documentation of the work in the show.

Exhibition: Octopus was an extraordinary anthology of 25 poets and visual artists, invited by Papo Colo, to create their work on a giant, outdoor book of poetry: a constructed work which presented a collective idea through an individual piece of sculpture. These artists/poets were invited to participate so that the work would combine the diverse currents in poetry existing at the time of artists from different cultures living in New York City.

The book, consisting of 13 plywood panels, each 4 feet wide and 8 feet high, had the capacity to open up to 52 feet long. Each artist/poet had one page/panel to represent them. The artists constructed their work in white on previously painted black pages, the white serving to visually unite a diverse group.
